Microsoft Office 2019 delivers new features focused on creativity and productivity
Microsoft are calling it the “perpetual” version of Office because once you pay the fee you will own it forever and it doesn’t get upgrades until the next major version is released. That is one of the differences from the Office 365, which requires monthly or annual subscriptions and more frequent updates.
The focus of the Office 2019 is to provide the most productive and secure Office experience for users. A couple of new features have been included to help end users create great content in less time. Updates include new and improved inking features across the apps, like the roaming pencil case, pressure sensitivity, and tilt effects; more powerful data analysis in Excel, like new formulas, new charts, and Power BI integration; and sophisticated presentation features in PowerPoint, like Morph and Zoom.

New chart types which include funnel charts and 2D maps, help identify insights, trends, and opportunities in the data.
PowerPoint Zoom it is also a new feature which can help you design more dynamic and exciting presentations.
New charts and formulas for Excel
According to the FAQ about the preview of Office 2019 released for commercial clients a couple of new features will be included in Excel as well:
- Funnel charts and 2D maps
- New Excel functions and connectors
- Ability to publish from Excel to PowerBI
- PowerPivot enhancements
- PowerQuery enhancements
Word new expected features
In Office 365 we could already experience the translator improved tool. This is expected to still be appearing in Office 2019 in a more straightforward experience. It is part of Microsoft’s plan to build artificial intelligence into the entire Office suite. The editor pane and Researcher features are likely to be improved in the Office 2019 too.
In addition to that, Microsoft says the following will be available in Word in Office 2019:
- Black theme
- Office sounds
- Learning tools captions and audio descriptions
- Text-to-speech feature
- Accessibility improvements
Additions to PowerPoint and Outlook
There will be other additions in Office 2019 regarding to PowerPoint and Outlook:
- Enhanced zoom capabilities that use the PowerPoint Morph feature
- Ability to manage icons, SVG and 3D images
- Ability to use the roaming pencil case that enables you to move objects by using the pen
- Updated contact cards
- Office 365 Groups
- Focused inbox
- Travel package cards
More IT value
Office 2019 also includes new IT value. Microsoft introduced Click-to-Run (C2R), a modern deployment technology, in Office 2013, and it's now used to deploy and update Office across hundreds of millions of devices worldwide. With Office 2019, they are moving the perpetual versions of Office to C2R exclusively, so IT team can take advantage of modern deployment technology to reduce costs and improve security.
The advantages of C2R include predictable monthly security updates, up-to-date apps on installation, reduced network consumption through Windows 10 download optimization technology, and an easy upgrade path to Office 365 ProPlus. C2R offers the same enterprise-focused management capabilities as MSI-based products and will also support an in-place upgrade when you move to Microsoft Office 2019 from older MSI-based products.
