GDPR is fast approaching and half of Irish businesses aren’t ready yet
According to an Ernest & Young (EY) survey, 54% of Irish businesses surveyed do not know if the consent they hold to use consumers’ personal data is compliant with GDPR or if a process of re-consent is required. It means that they are not ready for the new regulation and risk facing the large fines that come into effect with the GDPR legislation.
The survey also shows that 40% of businesses expressed an intent to hire a Data Protection Officer but had not yet done so. According to EY, this suggests a shortage of talent in the market, which may cause a rush to make appointments, either of DPOs or service providers who offer the service closer to the compliance deadline.
The results also indicate that soon – from May 2018, Irish business will be rushing to find data protection officers and any kind of specialist who will be able to help them to become GDPR compliant. Alan Deery, Director of New Horizons Ireland also agrees that is a risk for Irish business to wait until May to think about it. ‘We have been training people since last year, but still not enough to meet the market needs in the near future’.
Records of data processing
Under the regulation, organisations are required to document records of data processing, yet the survey found that 16% of companies have not started this process. It has been anticipated that the office of the data protection commissioner may well use a request for documentation as a first step in assessing compliance. Failure to produce on request, or inadequacies in same, may lead to an audit.
It is more than noticeable that most of the businesses aren’t ready to be 100% GDPR compliant, some of them as exposed in the survey aren’t even closer of it. The best action to take immediately is to start planning the steps and the actions needed from now. Training is usually the best option when it comes to acquire new knowledge.

Most know that GDPR is taking effect on May 25th 2018 which requires organizations to prepare technology, processes and people towards gaining compliance. Due to this EU regulation there has been a recent surge of training solutions that have become available in the marketplace. Unfortunately many make claims that their training will make your organization GDPR compliant which is not possible. To help decipher how to best prepare your organization for GDPR compliance, we have enlisted the help of the world’s largest data privacy certification and membership organization, International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). Paul Jordan, Managing Director – Europe IAPP, will provide clarity on why privacy and security sit on opposite sides of the front door to an organization, and how GDPR will impact organizations, people, technology and processes all over the world. Mr. Jordan will also will explain how IAPP’s ISO certified training, certifications and membership sets itself apart from other solutions. Do not miss this exceptional opportunity to hear the latest from Mr. Jordan while having the opportunity to ask questions how best to prepare your organization for GDPR and longer term data privacy needs.
