Speed up Excel

We’re in an age of Grab and Go technology for work. From hot-desks to constantly mobile staff, many of us are using laptops more and more to get stuff done. But when your work involves excel, the laptop track pad isn’t always the most efficient option. Maybe there’s a faster, better, way to go.

One of our trainers gives her top tip for using excel on the go.

-----

Whilst working on a small laptop gives a lot of freedom, I often find I’ve forgotten my mouse and I’m restricted to the trackpad. If I want to get from one side of the screen to the other from this tiny track tile, I have to do an awkward ‘tap, sweep, tap, sweep’ motion. It’s not great and tends to interrupt my thoughts and flow when I’m working.

Take, for example, when I want to quickly sort a column in a sheet I’m working on. I’m in a cell on the far left and the sort option is up, and way over to the right.
Or maybe I’m on the bottom of a big data set and I’d like to create a Pivot table real quick?
Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to easily just jump around my excel tabs, like some overly energetic grasshopper, rather than the usual slow tap, sweep?

Well. There is.

You can swiftly go to any tab, and command in only a few short key hits. It’s almost like having your own set of shortcuts to your most needed features.

Push the ‘ALT’ key on your keyboard. This lights up the ribbon with little letters. The letters allow you to jump to and activate the tabs.

When the tab is active, all the commands light up. Hit the letter by the command you need.

If there are sub commands, these will also light up for selection.

So, if I want to quick sort my column I hit ‘Alt’, then ‘H’ (activating the Home tab), Then ‘S’ for sort, and ‘S’ for sort A to Z. Now I know I can quickly hit ‘ALT, H, S, S’ in succession as my own quick sort shortcut.

And what about that quick Pivot table I wanted? Try ‘Alt, N (insert tab), V (pivot table)’.

Quick as crickets!
