A programming career can open doors to you and guarantee your professional development

According to Rob Jones, New Horizons Director of Corporate Services learn to code is a way to get into to the IT market quickly and guarantee that your knowledge will be worldwide accepted and in huge demand. Doesn’t matter where you are coding skills are in high needed all over the world and it will increase even more in the years ahead.

There is room for everybody in programming/developer’s career. Some of them are incredibly specialised and require detailed levels of programming knowledge, but a huge part of the current roles available in the market use software in creative and analytical ways. That’s why learning how to code is so essential and can be a great investment for your future.

3 Reasons Why You Should Learn to Code

1: Learn to code to better understand how software works

Code is everywhere. Learning how to write it is a way of understanding how so much of the world operates. Understanding how things are built and how they work puts you at an advantage, in that you have an extra dimension of knowledge of how things function ‘under the hood’.

2: Learning to code will help you better manipulate and use data

The world runs on data. Code can help you better understand it and manage it. If you’ve ever been impressed with someone’s dexterity with Excel, that’s just a type of code. In the world of data today there are more sophisticated systems for processing and managing data. But if you’re working with large datasets in any capacity, learning how to write SQL scripts, for example, is a great place to begin your coding adventure.

3: Learn to code simply to have fun

A lot of people think coding is purely technical – but the technical part is just a small aspect of it. It’s all about solving problems and being creative. It’s also a valuable skill which could increase your earning power. Even if it doesn’t transform your career, it could still give you a push to get to the next step.

Why there are so many opportunities in coding careers?

  • In the digital era more people will need to understand coding as a way to progress.
  • It is an opportunity for individuals to further their career while providing solutions for organizations.
  • Coding provides consumers of information with more power to analyse data

Even though, code careers are on the top of the list in the last years, the movement just started. Machine learning, AI and IoT are bringing much more opportunities for this market. The most recent Microsoft acquisition is a taste of what is about to come and the importance of programming. By buying GitHub, Microsoft bought for their house more 20 million users and 57 million software repositories. It's the biggest storehouse of open-source code on the planet. The message is pretty clear: developers, we will need you!

There is a wide diversity of code options for those already in the market. If you are considering starting a programming career the recommendation is to look for the language more broadly suitable and the one which fit to your skills and preference. As mentioned by Rob Jones above to learn how to write SQL scripts is a perfect start point, for example.
