A feature to help you easily find what is important to you

The new Windows 10 feature is called Timeline, and it will help you in a handy way to track activities you have been working on. So, you can jump back into them easily and it works across devices. For example, if you’re looking for a specific document, video, spreadsheet, which you worked one week ago, Timeline makes easier to find exactly what you are looking for.

You can even pick up what you were doing on your iOS or Android device on your Windows 10 PC when you’re ready to get back to it. The Timeline is part of the Windows 10 April 2018 Update, known as Redstone 4 and it can be one more feature to help you boost your productivity if you work on multiple projects, for example.

Timeline feature

The main thing about the Timeline is that you can go back and forth in time. You just need to scroll back to find things you were working on earlier today or a few weeks ago, within a maximum of 30 days of past activities.

To use the feature properly in all your devices you must be signed in with your Microsoft account in all of them.

To access it, click the new Taskbar icon (see image below) to see all your activities on a specific day grouped by hour, including all the things you were using Microsoft Edge and Office 365 on your tablet and mobile phone. If you don’t see what you need, you can search Timeline to find it. You can also open Task view by pressing Windows logo key + Tab.

You can also remove activities from a specific day or hour.

How to enable and disable Timeline

By default, Windows assumes that you want the Timeline turned on. In case you don’t want to, or you would like to manage how they use your information, you can visit the settings menu at Settings > Privacy > Activity History. There, you will have two options to check or uncheck: Let Windows collect my activities from this PC, and Let Windows sync my activities from this PC to the cloud. 

The first check box is simple: If it isn’t checked, Windows will essentially disable Timeline. Checking the first box, though, collects your activities from only this PC. If you check the first and the second one, your activities, and Timeline, will sync across devices and it means that the feature will work properly. If you sign in with the same account on another PC, you’ll be able to pick up where you left off no matter which PC you use.
